Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of the eighth grade; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. Applicants within six months of meeting the education/experience requirement may be considered for trainee status.
Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen & physical examination and successful completion of all applicable background checks pre-hire and ongoing are required.

Position Summary

This is responsible manual work in the inspection and disposal of refuse, and the monitoring of recycling, household hazardous waste and the Recovery and Reuse Program at the County's Collection Centers.

An employee assigned to this classification ensures that refuse, recycling and household hazardous waste entering the collection centers and items left for the Recovery and Reuse Program are acceptable, sorted properly, and of an acceptable daily volume.

Work is performed without direct supervision but is under the direction of a higher level supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation of results obtained.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

This is an emergency essential classification. Upon declaration of a disaster and/or emergency, all employees in this classification are required to work.

Exudes a positive customer service focus.

Advocates building organizational culture through aligning decisions with core values including: integrity, honesty, respect, diversity, innovation, accountability and communication.
 Inspects loads and directs customers to sort items or materials into bins according to type, size, condition, color, marking, or other characteristics.

Assist customers with disabilities as needed with disposal of materials.

Maintains hourly (vehicles entering center) and weekly (Recovery & Reuse Program) logs.

Monitors household hazardous waste collection (waste oil, oil filters, paint, auto/marine/dry cell batteries, fluorescent tubes, etc) and recycling (newspaper, corrugated cardboard, magazines, green, brown, and clear glass, aluminum and steel cans, milk jugs, soda bottles, mixed paper, etc).

Makes minor repairs to scrap containers as needed.

Inspects vehicles entering the site to ensure that refuse is acceptable, and within volume limits.

Maintains office cleanliness and insures collection area is clear of all debris and spillage.

Opens and closes collection centers following routine security procedures.

Operates garbage compaction equipment.

Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts, and is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. Vacation Leave – Generous vacation accrual rates with payout of unused accrued leave, with some restrictions. For more detailed information regarding vacation leave refer to Employee Policy Manual, Section 7-2.

Sick leave is earned at a rate of 4 hours per pay period by all permanent, full-time employees*. At the end of each fiscal year, eligible employees can convert up to 10 days of accrued sick leave to vacation leave on a 2:1 basis. Salary

$35,880.00 Annually
