Job Description

This position is for a strong SQL Developer with experience in combining multiple data sources into data warehouse or data lake for the purpose of creating reports and data visualizations from both transactional systems and analytic databases or data warehouses.  This position will be responsible for creating and editing SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports, editing or authoring stored procedures, views, functions and other database objects to support reporting and database jobs.  The database environments are SQL Server and Amazon Redshift Data Warehouse.  This position will understand a variety of AWS Data & Analytics services and how they interact.  They will be responsible for the support of the daily/weekly/monthly and ad hoc loading and transformation of data into the Enterprise Data Warehouse.  The tools currently used include SQL Server, AWS Data Migration Service, AWS Glue Notebooks, S3 buckets, Data Pipeline, SageMaker Notebooks, and QuickSight for data Visualization, Dashboards and scheduled report delivery. 

This position will enjoy working with a diverse set of users to understand their data and reporting needs, can thoroughly document and communicate complex business rules and reporting needs, and can creatively solve problems with data and reporting with innovative ideas. Experience with data analysis, the ability to see trends, spot outliers, and solve problems in data are required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Primary developer on our Enterprise Data Warehouse.  This includes preparing source data for inclusion in our data warehouse, support of ETL jobs and revision of ETL, design of data warehouse tables and structures, modeling data for efficient and flexible reporting by end users.   It will also include generating data sets in a visualization tool (QuickSight, Tableau) for shared use across the organization and creating dashboards and data visualizations or consumption by all levels of the organization.
  • Support KC departments with data needs and develop or maintain existing solutions that may involve SQL Server jobs, SSRS reports, SSIS packages,  MS Access Development or AWS automations.  These solutions may include reports, lists, integrations with other systems, automations, etc. to fulfill requests.
  • Support and encourage SQL Best Practices, SSRS Best Practices and QuickSight best practices.  Participate in SQL review and change management activities, promote ddl changes to production and ensure code backups and source control usage.
  • Support data hygiene and data governance activities along with the Business Systems team.  Provide support, thought partnering, review of process and code when performing data hygiene tasks or enforcing data governance rules.
  • Support Data & Analytics team in maintenance of tools and systems including maintenance of technology (patching, upgrades) and advocacy with users (training, documentation).
  • Other duties as assigned

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent
  • 5 years experience in technical environment, working with data, performing data analysis, interacting with data as a technical resource.
  • Significant hands-on experience writing SQL Code - stored procedures, views, and functions for Microsoft SQL Server as well as familiarity with database design standards in both a transactional database and a data warehouse.
  • Experience with Amazon Redshift, AWS Glue, AWS QuickSight
  • Knowledge of SSRS (SQL  Server Reporting Services), QuickSight or other visualization tools
  • Well organized and detail oriented
  • Proven ability to work within a technical team as well as function within a larger team of colleagues across the center.
  • Flexibility to participate in after-hours on-call coverage as needed.
  • Flexibility to be occasionally available nights and weekends to perform upgrades and other work.
  • Candidate must be local or willing to relocate to the DMV area.
