Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

This is a dual-role position requiring the selected candidate to serve as both a Bus Driver and a Camp Counselor. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and hiring requirements for both positions to be considered eligible.

Compensation will be based on the role being performed:

  • Bus Driver: $19.50 per hour

  • Camp Counselor: $18.50 per hour

Candidates must be able to successfully fulfill the duties and responsibilities of each role, including all required certifications, licensing, background checks, and training associated with both positions.



Bus Driver Minimums:
Graduation from High School or equivalent.
A Valid Class “B” Commercial Florida Driver License with passenger endorsement is required and a Motor Vehicle Record that meets the requirements of Alachua County policy #6-7; Motor Vehicle Records will be reviewed prior to employment.   If, in the past 24-month period, the applicants Motor Vehicle Record has more than three (3) moving traffic infractions or three (3) or more at fault motor vehicle accidents (or combination of both and /or a conviction/pending charge for driving under the influence) or is in violation of any standard mandated by Federal or State Law or Regulation, the minimum qualifications are not met for the position.

Successful completion of a pre-employment DOT drug screen & physical examination and requires the successful completion of a Level 2 criminal history background investigation prior to employment including finger printing and compliance with Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) requirements.

Camp Counselor Minimums:
Graduation from High School or equivalent.
Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen & physical examination and requires the successful completion of a Level 2 criminal history background investigation prior to employment including finger printing and compliance with Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) requirements.CPR/First Aid certification is required; this training will be provided upon hire.  Water Safety training is required, this training will be provided upon hire.

Position Summary

This is a seasonal recreational position responsible for the safe and timely transportation of campers and staff to and from camp and designated locations.
This position ensures adherence to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and organizational policies while maintaining a positive and welcoming environment for passengers.

Examples of Duties

Exudes a positive customer service focus.

Advocates building organizational culture through aligning decisions with the County’s corevalues.

Safely operates a bus or other assigned vehicle along scheduled routes and for special trips.

Performs pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, reporting any mechanical issues or maintenance needs.

Maintains a clean and orderly vehicle interior and exterior.

Enforces safety rules and ensures all passengers remain seated and wear seat belts (if available) during transport.

Follows established routes and schedules, adjusting for weather, traffic, or other conditions as necessary.

Assists passengers with boarding and exiting the bus, especially younger campers or those with special needs.

Maintains accurate transportation logs, mileage records, inspection reports, and incident reports as required.

Responds appropriately to emergencies or accidents and reports all incidents promptly to camp management.

Provides friendly and courteous customer service to campers, parents, and staff.

Follows emergency protocols and responds appropriately to unexpected situations.

Builds strong working relationships with staff, campers, and parents; professionally represents the Department and Cuscowilla.

Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.

Knowledge of vehicle safety procedures, traffic laws, and defensive driving practices.

Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance and inspection procedures.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact positively with children, parents, and staff.

Problem-solving skills for managing delays, emergencies, or behavioral issues.

Ability to safely operate the passenger bus.

Ability to remain calm and make quick, sound decisions in emergency situations.

Ability to interact positively with children and maintain a calm demeanor in stressful situations.

Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.

Ability to assist campers with boarding and exiting the vehicle.

Ability to perform basic vehicle inspections and safety checks.

The employee frequently lifts and/or moves up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
