Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Cybersecurity Engineer position. The Cybersecurity Engineer is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $120,000 per year - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
Working with the CISO, our Cybersecurity Engineer (CE) ensures that appropriate and effective procedures are in place and appropriately configured for the protection of the College's information resources. This position will support daily operations and projects that improve our information security program. Collaborating with various team members, the CE advances our risk management and resilience objectives and is a key member of our security incident response team with operational and incident command responsibilities as the situation requires. Our Cybersecurity Engineer works independently as well as in teams to lead and facilitate cybersecurity related projects within Information Technology and across the College. This role requires a blend of leadership and operational skills to establish and maintain procedures and protocols that foster an encouraging and inclusive work and learning environment.
Due to the nature of the position, work outside normal hours of operation may be required.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Administrative Support of Information Security Program
• Implement detailed cybersecurity strategies and solutions to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of our information systems.
Governance, Risk, and Compliance
• Work closely with various teams to develop and implement robust security controls, policies, and procedures so they comply with Amherst College, the state of Massachusetts, and federal cybersecurity requirements.
• Conduct regular security risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities and recommend vital adjustments to improve our overall security posture and improve operational resilience.
• Assist with the Vendor Risk Management program to review and provide risk management recommendations related to vendor security posture.
Security Engineering and Operations
• Keep informed about the latest cybersecurity trends and technologies, ensuring our organization stays ahead in implementing effective cybersecurity measures.
• Perform threat hunting and analyze potential, successful, and unsuccessful intrusion attempts and compromises for opportunities to tune security controls and update processes to mitigate risk.
• Lead incident response efforts, investigate security incidents, and coordinate appropriate mitigation and recovery measures.
• Manage vulnerability scans, penetration testing, and web application risk assessments and provide guidance to affected departments and teams to mitigate and remediate findings.
• Monitor change notifications, advisories and alerts for solutions that support the Information Security program and ensure configuration and use complies with institution and regulatory standards and provides appropriate value to the college.
• Contribute to and learn from the cybersecurity community in higher education through participation in security forums and professional development opportunities.
Performs other duties/functions as requested

Qualifications:
Required
• Bachelor's degree or at least 5 years of experience in systems administration, information security or other IT related role.
• Knowledge of information security principles, practices, techniques, and tools.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
• Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
• Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.
• Experience in a Security, Systems Administrator, Systems Engineer, or Network Engineer (or equivalent) role for 5-8 years.
• Strong customer service philosophy and the ability to focus on providing a seamless and secure user experience.
Preferred
• Advanced degree or equivalent experience in a technology field.
• CISSP, SANS, or equivalent cybersecurity certification.
• Knowledge and understanding of current and developing strategic cybersecurity requirements of higher education.
• Experience using project management tools as part of a team environment.
• Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
• Experience handling implementations and upgrades in a complex IT environment involving on-premise and SaaS/Cloud solutions, solutions involving extensive data integrations.
• Certification in one or more cybersecurity or risk management disciplines.
• Demonstrated cybersecurity skills within a higher education environment.
• Advanced analytical, evaluative, and objective critical thinking skills.
• Ability to effectively summarize and present information through reports and dashboards.
• Experience with a variety of cybersecurity tools, such as firewalls, email security gateways, endpoint detection and response (EDR), vulnerability management, log management, incident response, and security operations.
