Job Summary: Provides custodial services to the Police Department jail facility.

Representative Duties

Sweeps and mops floors.

Washes, strips, buffs and waxes floors.

Cleans and disinfects restrooms.

Cleans and washes walls, windows and mirrors.

Stocks and replenishes restrooms with supplies.

Collects and removes trash.

Cleans stoves, ovens, refrigerators, freezers, sink areas, microwave ovens, cupboards and the kitchen area.

Cleans jail cells including washing mattresses, bunks, toilets and sinks.

Sweeps, dusts and mops floors. Vacuums and shampoos carpets.

Secures buildings, including doors, gates, and windows.

Orders cleaning supplies. Replaces various light bulbs.

May drive a City vehicle or other small utility vehicle.

Performs minor maintenance and repairs to City facilities and equipment or refers problems to appropriate staff.

Assists in feeding prisoners and performing laundry duties.

Follows applicable safety rules and regulations.

Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

Knowledge of: 
Cleaning tools, solutions and cleaning equipment.
Safe lifting and work practices.
Basic mathematics.
Effective customer service techniques.

Ability to: 
Follow oral and written instructions in English.
Perform continuous physical labor, including bending and lifting.
Operate power cleaning equipment, such as buffers, steam cleaners, scrubbers, and vacuums.
Mix and measure solvents and chemicals.
May be required to learn simple plumbing, painting and carpentry repair techniques.
Provide effective customer service.
Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public

Skill in: 
Reading and understanding labels, directions and work orders.

Education, Training and Experience:

Sufficient training and experience to read, write and communicate in English.

Six months of recent, paid janitorial experience within a law enforcement agency or as a Custodian with the City of Santa Monica which has included the use of power cleaning equipment.

Licenses and Certificates:

Possession of a valid Class C driver license.

NOTE:  If three or more qualified City employees apply and pass the examination, a promotional list will be established in addition to an open-competitive list.  If fewer than three qualified City employees pass the examination, the appointing authority in accordance with the City's civil service rules and regulations, can decline to use a promotional list, in which case a promotional list will not be established for this position
