PAY AND BENEFITS

Crime Scene Investigator 1

Annual Pay Range: $65,673.02 - $72,314.21

Hourly Pay Range: $31.573565 - $34.766447

Crime Scene Investigator 2

Annual Pay Range: $75,922.00 - $97,227.48

Hourly Pay Range: $36.500960 - $46.743982

Salary offers will be made within the posted pay range and will be based on a candidate's experience (paid or unpaid) that is directly relevant to the position.

JOB DETAILS AND QUALIFICATIONS

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office has an immediate need for a Crime Scene Investigator. The goal is to fill this position with the most competitive candidate as a Crime Scene Investigator 1 (CSI 1) or Crime Scene Investigator 2 (CSI 2) based on the chosen candidate's level of experience.

The Crime Scene Investigator 1 is a specialized and highly trained professional responsible for conducting thorough investigations of crime scenes. They work under the direction of more senior investigators, such as Crime Scene Investigator 2s and detectives, to identify, preserve, and analyze evidence. As a key member of the investigative team, the Crime Scene Investigator 1 must apply a variety of specialized techniques to collect, preserve, and identify evidence at crime scenes and within the laboratory.

In addition to their fieldwork, Crime Scene Investigators must possess strong analytical skills to interpret and evaluate evidence in the laboratory. They must also be able to communicate their findings effectively in a court of law, providing expert testimony on the methods and results of their processes and analysis.

The Crime Scene Investigator 1 is part of a promotional path. Incumbents in the Crime Scene Investigator 1 classification will be promoted to the Crime Scene Investigator 2 classification upon satisfactory completion of an approved promotional plan, which includes obtaining certifications outlined below within two and a half years (30 months) of hire.

The Crime Scene Investigator 2 is a highly trained and specialized professional responsible for conducting scientific investigations involving the identification, preservation, and analysis of trace evidence. In addition, they are trained in latent print examination and comparison. As a key member of the investigative team, Crime Scene Investigator 2s perform a variety of complex and specialized tasks to collect, preserve, and identify criminal evidence at crime scenes, as well as analyze evidence in the laboratory.

To be a Crime Scene Investigator 2, incumbents must possess specialized training and certifications in forensic science, and must have demonstrated proficiency in the use of advanced analytical techniques and tools. They must be able to provide expert testimony in court on their methods and the results of their analysis.

The Crime Scene Investigator 2 role differs from the Crime Scene Investigator 1, which does not require the same level of specialized training and certifications upon hire.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

This is not a sworn position but does require a complete Statement of Personal History (SPH).

Only those applicants selected will need to submit the SPH. The SPH is due 10 calendar days AFTER you have been notified. Applicants will receive instructions from the Department of Human Resources or the Sheriff's Office on how to login to the electronic SPH.


Crime Scene Investigator 1 - Required Minimum Qualifications/ Transferrable Skills:*
  • Relevant experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills to perform the responsibilities of this position.
    • The following licensure/certifications are required within two and a half years (30 months) of hire.
      • International Association for Identification (IAI) Latent Print Examiner Certification
      • International Association for Identification (IAI) Crime Scene Investigator Certification (Basic)
  • Strong ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Proficient in organizing, analyzing and presenting scientific data with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of scientific principles and techniques related to evidence collection and analysis, including crime scene processing and forensic laboratory procedures.
  • Experience with the use of specialized equipment and tools, such as cameras, forensic light sources, and evidence collection kits.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to manage complex and high-pressure situations.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills to identify and interpret relevant evidence and determine the best course of action.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of investigative activities and evidence.
  • Knowledge of courtroom procedures and the ability to provide expert testimony on methods and results of analysis.
  • Continuing education and professional development in the field of forensic science and related areas.
  • Ability to work in challenging conditions that may involve exposure to unpleasant elements of crime scenes, including handling, removing and analyzing deceased persons.
  • Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation, including national fingerprint records check.

Crime Scene Investigator 2 - Required Minimum Qualifications/ Transferrable Skills:*
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a criminal justice based forensic science position, with a strong emphasis on crime scene processing, latent print processing and analysis, forensic laboratory procedures, photography and/or evidence processing.
    • The following licensure/certifications are required within six (6) months of hire.
      • International Association for Identification (IAI) Latent Print Examiner Certification
      • International Association for Identification (IAI) Crime Scene Investigator Certification (Basic)
  • Strong ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Proficient in organizing, analyzing and presenting scientific data with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of scientific principles and techniques related to evidence collection and analysis, including crime scene processing and forensic laboratory procedures.

Preferred Special Qualifications/ Transferrable Skills:*
  • Experience testifying in State/Federal courts as an expert witness, demonstrating the ability to effectively communicate complex scientific information to a lay audience.

Other Qualifications:

  • Possession of a Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) Certification is required within 3 months of employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Tasks are performed in a variety of settings, including office and laboratory, indoor and outdoor environments, in and around vehicles, and may involve moderately strenuous physical activity.

Duties involve exposure to unpleasant elements of death scenes such as handling, removing and analyzing persons who are deceased, hazardous chemical and biological materials, and long periods spent wearing personal protective equipment up to an including encapsulated suits, respirators, and protective boots and gloves.


WORK SCHEDULE

This position works 40 hours during a standard workweek of Monday through Friday. Specific hours of work will be discussed with the candidate selected for this position at the time an offer of employment is extended.

This position is designated as on-site/in-person. It is expected that the selected candidate will perform duties at the specified on-site work location.
