The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Foundation of Idaho seeks a full-time Communications Strategist to join our staff of seven in Boise. The Communications Strategist will act as the chief architect for developing and managing the organization’s strategic communications work to advance the mission of the ACLU of Idaho. Our staff of seven employees work in a fast-paced, friendly office in the heart of downtown Boise, Idaho. Boise, the City of Trees, is the capitol of Idaho and the core of a metro area of 660,000 people. The city enjoys all four seasons in a dry climate and offers an exceptional quality of life and a diverse business community with high tech industries. Recreational activities include whitewater rafting and kayaking, climbing, fishing, hunting, and skiing. There is a 135 mile foothill trail system for hiking and mountain biking and a 25 mile riverside greenbelt along the Boise River which flows through the city. Cultural opportunities include museums, contemporary theater, outdoor Shakespeare Theater, ballet, opera, symphony, dance, and rodeo. Over 95 languages are spoken in Idaho. The Treasure Valley, which includes the cities of Boise, Meridian, Nampa and Caldwell is home to state’s largest Latino community. Boise is also a hub for LGBTQ communities and political activism in Idaho. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Strategy: Will develop and execute a communications strategy that reinforces the ACLU brand, heightens visibility of the ACLU of Idaho and supports the organization’s identified goals and priorities. Media Relations : Handle all aspects of media relations, including maintaining relationships with reporters in all major Idaho media markets, writing and disseminating press releases, pitching stories to targeted reporters, drafting talking points, arranging interviews with ACLU spokespersons, coaching spokespersons and making statements when directed to by the Executive Director. Digital Communications: Manage content of the ACLU of Idaho’s website, drafting and posting content regularly to keep the site up-to-date. Manage the organization’s social media platforms, currently Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. Produce social media content and share ACLU news, promote online-advocacy campaigns, publicize events to broad audiences. Increase social media presence to educate the public and engage allies, partners, supporters, donors and decision-makers. Print Materials: Manage development, distribution, and maintenance of all print collateral, including, newsletters, brochures, an annual report, event invitations and promotional items. Provide editorial and design direction; handle quality control and proofreading; oversee production; and create and implement distribution plans. Community Outreach: Identify opportunities for community outreach and meaningful engagement at events and mobilize volunteers to represent the ACLU of Idaho through tabling. Recruit, train and deploy volunteers to speak about the ACLU of Idaho before community groups and in schools/universities. Manage overall communication and messaging to volunteer base. Provide oversight and support for ACLU-ID campus clubs, including attending occasional meetings and events. Provide support for community based events such as: Activist Academy, Banned Books Week, Law & Liberty series, town hall meetings, coalition meetings, rallies, and forums. Developing and maintaining positive relationships in the community to support movement building, coalitions, volunteers’ engagement, and other organizational support. QUALIFICATIONS Committed to advancing the ACLU of Idaho values, mission, goals and programs, with an understanding of the range of civil liberties issues and their implications. Minimum of 3 years of experience and demonstrated success in communications or related field, preferably in the nonprofit sector. Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing or public relations preferred. Demonstrated success directing and implementing media campaigns, writing press releases, handling press contacts, and training/coaching spokespersons. Knowledge of Idaho media preferred. Excellent writing and editing skills for both print and online audiences; strong verbal communication skills. Proven ability to transform complex ideas into exciting and useful messages, and disseminate information to targeted audiences through the right channels. Understanding of trends and best practices for online campaigning, and best practices for email marketing, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube; experience using social media trend analysis tools is preferred. Experience using Photoshop or other design tools to create basic graphics. Ability to build grassroots support, to identify opportunities for coordination with allies and coalition partners, and motivate volunteers and spokespeople to support the ACLU of Idaho’s mission. Demonstrated ability to create and sustain coalitions of diverse individuals or groups preferred. Flexibility and strong time management and multi-tasking skills; ability to implement multiple projects simultaneously, manage tight deadlines and unexpected tasks as they arise. A demonstrated commitment to civil liberties and social justice. Ability and commitment to work odd hours on an ad hoc basis in order to get the job done. Must have a vehicle and the flexibility to travel; overnight stays may be possible (expenses paid by the ACLU). COMPENSATION: This is a full-time, salaried position. The ACLU of Idaho offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with experience and within the parameters of the ACLU of Idaho staff pay scale.
