ODOT's highway maintenance division is recruiting for one full-time, permanent transportation maintenance specialists to help maintain the roads and areas next to the roads in north Portland. We are looking for a person with a range of skills and the ability to develop new skills related to: heavy equipment, roadway surface repair, irrigation systems, vegetation management, traffic control, and more.  

The person hired into this position will join a maintenance crew and will do manual labor and operate equipment to maintain, repair, and/or reconstruct roadways, highways, freeways, bridges, and/or rest area facilities.

  • Effective November 1, 2016, Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) eligible SEIU represented employees will have their base salary increased by 6.95%.  Upon PERS eligibility, SEIU employees pay the employee 6% contribution to PERS.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain vegetation areas, mow grass, spray pesticides and herbicides, and dispose of roadside debris.
  • Dig and clean ditches, catch basins and drainage systems.
  • Repair culverts, inlets and erosion.
  • Maintain rest areas and perform minor building maintenance.
  • Install and/or maintain irrigation systems.
  • Perform surface repair, build or repair roadway shoulders and bike paths.
  • Sweep highway/roadway and perform clean-up of sidewalks, graffiti, paving, bridge walks, and islands.
  • Plow snow, sand and deice roadways.
  • Repair or replace guardrails, barriers, fences, glare screens, roadway delineators or milepost markers. 
  • Replace or maintain highway/roadway, signs, striping and/or legends.
  • Service and repair equipment and tools.
  • Respond and coordinate accidents and other emergencies, provide traffic control and coordinate with other agencies to ensure safety and assist with clean up.
  • Read and interpret plans and layouts for projects.

Working Conditions

This position requires a maximum response time for emergency call-outs. You must be able to respond to the maintenance office within 45 minutes. 

Exposure to heavy traffic conditions.

Operate on or near heavy equipment, power tools, and heavy traffic, subject to noise, adverse weather, dangerous equipment, pesticides, fertilizers, and hazardous waste materials.

Manual labor is required. Must walk, stand, bend, and stoop for extended periods.

Must be able to work safely with power and hand tools and other equipment, operate government vehicles, and lift up to 60 pounds.

Employees may be required to work any hours/shift, any day of the week, including holidays, for emergency, on-call, and weather-related purposes

Qualifications, Required & Requested Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of maintenance and/or construction experience in roadway/highway, bridge, sign, drawbridge or landscape (any type of ground maintenance, including tree, shrub and lawn maintenance; sprinkler system maintenance, cleaning ditches and catch basins, or work related to professional/commercial or public landscaping, farming or logging);                      AND
Experience in each of the following areas:

  • Operating heavy and/or light motorized equipment;
  • Using hand and power tools;
  • Performing minor servicing of equipment, AND
  • Applying safety procedures.


Two years of experience operating construction and maintenance machinery to include one or more of the following types: front-end loader, road grader, bulldozer, backhoe, tractor/low-boy, and 5- or 10- yard dump truck.

Special Qualifications:

  • Employee will be required to use a commercial motor vehicle to conduct business; you must possess a current, valid commercial driver's license A (CDL-A) or have the ability to acquire one within three months of hire (ODOT will cover training and costs) to be considered eligible for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s).
  • This position requires a maximum 45 minute response time to: 1100 N Columbia Blvd, Portland, OR 97217 for emergency call-outs.

Preference may be given to candidates who have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Roadway/Highway maintenance (and/or construction). 
  • Snow removal using a snow plow, or by sanding or deicing.
  • Roadside assistance and emergencies experience.
  • Performing minor servicing of equipment.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Creating professional and collaborative working relationships.
