FareStart is a thriving social enterprise breaking the cycle of poverty one person at a time. It focuses on the local Seattle community, teaching people who are homeless, in recovery, or previously incarcerated the skills they need to find lifelong careers. FareStart transforms lives.


By providing life skills training, job training, and employment in the food service industry, FareStart empowers its students to achieve self-sufficiency. In its 24 years, FareStart has trained more than 7,000 youth and adults with invaluable hands-on job training alongside culinary professionals through its training programs, and provided more than 6.5 million nutritious meals to hungry children and families in King County through its contract meals business. Award winning restaurants, cafes, and catering services generate revenues that help offset program expenses.




FareStart is implementing an ambitious growth agenda in 2017. The organization’s operating budget is increasing from $14M to $20M+ and staff is increasing from 175 to over 200 strong. In order to support and drive its major growth initiatives, FareStart is adding a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to its Senior Leadership Team.


Reporting to the CEO, the new COO will:


  • Lead execution of key business and growth initiatives
  • Collaborate across departments and functions to ensure FareStart has the infrastructure of systems, processes, and people in place to accommodate rapid expansion
  • Spearhead change management as the organization grows and increases in complexity
  • Bring a deep understanding of how the varied needs of FareStart’s staff, students, and constituencies differ and intersect in order to foster an inclusive culture that prioritizes the needs of each audience without bias
  • Support staff through their own professional development

  • 10+ years of experience in progressively responsible executive leadership roles
  • Operational leadership in diverse, complex business environments
  • Demonstrated ability to drive execution of strategy
  • Track-record and leading organizational change and growth is essential for success in this role
  • High-level knowledge of people and HR practices is valued
  • A bachelors’ degree or equivalent experience is required and an advanced degree preferred.
