The Global Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (“DEI”) Director is a vital role for evolving the WMF culture. The position requires both big-picture, strategic thinking as well as operational skills to set targets and mobilize action in all aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Director is a critical thought partner with internal leadership and a key voice for DEI both within the Foundation, as well as externally, via speaking at public events, program facilitation, and participation in career fairs.
This position is critical in managing and evolving current programs, as well as creating meaningful Foundation DEI policies, overseeing the steady implementation of these policies against set goals, advising Foundation leadership on strategic and emerging DEI issues, and disseminating best practices across the organization, all while championing and reflecting the Foundation’s values and culture. The role will also create and manage programs, provide practical advisory services and assessments to Foundation staff looking to encourage DEI within their teams, analyze and report on staff diversity data to Foundation leadership and staff, lead DEI communication strategies to be shared with stakeholders and staff, shepherd and advise our employee resource groups (“ERGs”) and recommend future DEI related projects and programs. This role reports to the Chief of Talent & Culture.
The Wikimedia Foundation is just one part of the broader Wikimedia movement. Just as the Foundation is experiencing rapid growth, culture shift and a crucial focus on expanding its DEI commitment, the entire movement is also growing and evolving around the world, bringing a wealth of new cultures and communities into our world. The DEI Director will have a primary focus on DEI efforts within the Foundation, while providing thought leadership and support to ensure that Wikipedia is a thriving community of editors, readers and collaborators, which means, cultivating a welcoming, diverse, sustainable, inclusive, respectful and safe movement of leaders, contributors, readers, advocates, developers, allies and partners. This role will also require aligning with the Chief of Community Engagement and the Community Engagement team in support of the global community.
You are responsible for:
Leading and developing programs in support of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion at the Foundation
Using quantitative and qualitative data to inform Foundation DEI efforts
Implementing a DEI plan and also training programs to support and encourage staff to prioritize DEI elements in their respective work areas
Being a critical thought partner regarding formal policies, responsibilities/expectations, performance management, goals, and our core values.
Having a solution-minded approach with strong big picture project management ability.
Identifying collaborators, leading across teams while offering well thought out proposals that have a clearly defined scope.
Strategically evaluating policies within the organization and partnering with stakeholders to make recommendations, build out new policies and improve existing ones
Advising staff on best DEI practices, and linking staff to good practice programs outside the Foundation
Working collaboratively with others from around the world, conveying multicultural competence
Advising senior leadership on DEI trends, and setting, monitoring and reporting to senior leadership on DEI accountabilities
Providing coaching on DEI matters to all levels of the Foundation in a variety of formats, individual, group and team
Managing related Talent & Culture (human resources) projects, and collaborating in cross team projects
Advising on building DEI considerations into recruiting and retention strategies at scale.
Being highly accountable in representing the Foundation internally and externally on DEI, in presentations and written communications
Mediating staff issues with compassion, active listening, and understanding, while maintaining confidentiality
Working cross-functionally to support our vision for diversity equity and inclusion.
Supporting the direction of the Talent and Culture department in collaboration with other leaders in the department
Leading a passionate DEI team and providing them with best practices, insights, and a strong direction
Managing performance of the DEI team
Developing staff of DEI team
Managing a budget to support growing programs and initiatives
Liaising with internal legal counsel as needed
Skills and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 8+yrs diversity & inclusion experience, or equivalent experience/education
Demonstrated experience managing global DEI programs
Passion for and experience with training and inspiring great people
Experience using data analytics platforms (excel, google sheets) to inform storytelling and presentations
Discretion in managing complex situations and handling sensitive information
Strong written and verbal communications, and demonstrated expertise in intercultural communications
Proven ability to create presentations and facilitate them to large groups
Ability to prioritize tasks and adjust quickly to new circumstances to overcome obstacles
Strong listening, reasoning and strategic skills with proven ability to influence, execute, and direct a wide range of diverse stakeholders
Flexible to flow between independent work and work needing collaboration
Sound judgement, integrity, and composure in the face of challenges
Experience being a model for a progressive HR team
Highly empathetic, trustworthy, and reliable
