GALLERY EDUCATOR SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Director of Education, Gallery Educator: University and Adult Education works in close collaboration with the MSU Broad Education Team to develop and implement MSU Broad touring programs and associated in-gallery activities for adults and university courses. They contribute to the content, methodology, and overall vision for in-galley teaching by developing/leading tours and overseeing the docent, gallery guide, and volunteer training programs. As a gallery educator, this position is responsible for assuring that all volunteers are up-to-date on the current standards in museum pedagogy for youth, adults, and special needs populations.
Work closely with Director of Education to identify short- and long-term goals for 1). Touring programs, 2). University faculty and student engagement, and 3). Community Docent, Gallery Guide, and Volunteer training programs
Foster engaged learning experiences by developing, delivering, and evaluating dynamic inquiry-based tour experiences and associated activities for university classes, community groups, individuals, and other audiences as assigned.
Develop strategies and resources for thematic tours, hack-style tours, special exhibition tours, and associated in-gallery activities in coordination with current exhibitions and collections on view.
Conduct independent research on artists and artworks in MSU Broad exhibitions and collection. Develops training materials for docents and gallery guides.
Supervise and manage all aspects of Community Docent Corps including: communication and administration; observation and evaluation; scheduling and logistics; and recruitment.
Develop and teach ongoing training and continuing education on best practices in-gallery education for docents, gallery guides, volunteers, and education staff.
Development of training curriculum and lesson plans for new continuing docents; co-teach semester-long new docent training program.
Work closely with Visitor Services to develop training programs for Gallery Guides that aid them in successful interactions with our visitors.
Work closely with the Museum Educator: PreK-12 + Family Programs to plan, implement, and evaluate school tours. Contribute to and facilitate training of staff and volunteers, including docents, who support activities for educators and PreK-12 audiences.
Build university relationships and collaborative partnerships with faculty that promote the use of the museum and collection.
Evaluate effectiveness, maintain statistics and attendance tracking, and prepare monthly/annual reports for tour programs and docent corps.
Maintain a visible presence in the local, state, and national art and museum education community, stay current with recent research and writing, collaborate and network with other museum educators.
Work collaboratively with MSU Broad Education Team to offer general education and museum event support as assigned.
Hours will vary 30 or more hours a week.

The associate/assistant curator will propose and organize original exhibitions of contemporary art across a variety of mediums. They will assist with the research, development, planning, production, and interpretation of the permanent collection and special exhibitions, both organized by the MSU Broad and hosted, as assigned by the director. Additionally, the asc/ast curator organizes and contributes to publications for the Museum exhibition program. They will lead a team of co-workers drawn from a variety of museum areas. S/he is charged with the hiring and supervision of non-salaried curatorial interns to assist in exhibition and publication research and planning. The asc/ast curator will participate in the Museum acquisitions process by proposing new acquisitions and leading research on the collection. They will be asked to represent the museum by presenting public lectures and participating in other educational initiatives, and to provide exhibition related interpretative information to the Education team to aid in docent instruction and training for each exhibition. As an active member of the curatorial team, the asc/ast curator will serve as a spokesperson for the Museum, working to , maintain advantageous relations with the art community, local as well as national and international, including artists, collectors, and prospective donors.
Propose and organize permanent collection and special exhibitions within the Museum exhibition program.
Prepares publications and scholarly articles in relation to the Museum exhibition program.
Propose acquisitions, and assist in the research, development, interpretation and exhibition of the Museum’s permanent collection.
Oversee and coordinate permanent collection, special, and traveling exhibitions as assigned by the Museum director.
Facilitate inter-departmental communication and communications with freelance workers regarding exhibitions, working closely with departments of exhibitions, registration, preparations, PR and marketing and external affairs.
Lead external communication with artists, collectors, lenders, galleries, and corresponding staff from other museums.
Drafting and produce correspondence, loan forms, manuscripts, exhibition didactic text, memoranda, and other materials related to permanent collection and special exhibitions.
Assist with acquisition, permanent collection, and exhibition research.
Supervise the work assignments and activities of interns, contract workers and volunteers in the curatorial department.
Represent the curatorial department and the Museum as needed. Deliver lectures, participated in other educational initiatives, host exhibition tours to visitors, docents, or other special groups, and promote the Museum to further its mission.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
