Job Summary:
The Laboratory Technician will undertake various laboratory procedures of a technical nature, including handling sensitive equipment to perform tests on biological specimens. They will help optimize laboratory procedures and produce reliable results that will be used in marine mammal care, treatment, and research.
Essential Functions:
Clinical Lab: 65 %
Quality Control and Assurance (QC/QA) checks of clinical laboratory analyzers.
Operates clinical laboratory equipment, including, but not limited to hematology and serum biochemistry analyzers.
Performs urinalysis dipstick and urine specific gravity.
Stains cytology and blood smears.
Performs gram stains for microbiologic organisms.
Prepares parasitology samples.
Tracks specimens in database in accordance with standards set forth within the organization.
Prepares and extracts samples for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
Assists in shipping samples for external diagnostic testing.
Histology: 20%
Trims histology samples from necropsy cases.
Assists in archiving slides, paraffin blocks, and formalin fixed tissues.
Assists in shipping samples for histology.
Assists in disposal of formalin and formalin fixes tissues.
Inputs data into database in accordance with standards set forth within the program.
Biobank: 10%
Assists with inventorying and archiving of the Center’s extensive biosample freezers.
Accesses archived biosamples for various research projects.
Inputs data into database in accordance with standards set forth within the program.
Other Duties as Assigned: 5%
Represent and promote the Center through donor cultivation participation with the department as opportunities arise.
Perform special projects and research as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:
This position requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in biological or medical laboratory science or related field; and 2 years’ experience in a laboratory setting, which can include time spent in a laboratory setting during classes or internships.
Respirator Fit Test required which will be provided upon hire and ongoing as necessary.
Valid driver license with acceptable motor vehicle record to maintain standards of insurability. (Must be 21+ years old as frequently driving company vehicles is required for this position.)
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
This position requires work in a necropsy and laboratory environment, which requires use of sharp objects, working around mechanical parts, working with or near known or unknown toxic or caustic chemicals and/or biological hazards, exposure to fumes and airborne particles, and working with strong odors associated with animals and carcasses.
This position requires work in an environment that involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials or chemicals and situations that require extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment and completion of training procedures.
Routinely uses laboratory equipment such as Biochemistry analyzer and a Hematology analyzer, as well as centrifuges, scales, homogenizers and pipettes.
This position operates in a professional office, laboratory, and hospital environment both indoors and outdoors with access to other parts of the facilities via outdoor pathways.
Working in outdoor weather conditions and elements may be required for field necropsies.
Routinely uses standard office equipment requiring repetitive motion.
Ability to work at a desk for extended periods of time using a computer.
Ability to drive/operate a vehicle for extensive periods of time, this includes operating large trucks to assist with transporting animals between sites.
Ability to perform physical work requiring manual dexterity, agility, strength, and coordination including ability to move up to 50 pounds (22kg).
Ability to crouch down and work with large carcasses.
Ability to spend extended periods on your feet, walking, and climbing stairs (potentially in inclement weather conditions).
Exposure and working with laboratory chemicals, including formalin.
Exposure to sharp instruments and needles.
Exposure to allergens and zoonotic diseases, including exposure through biosamples.

Job Summary:
The Necropsy Manager facilitates smooth operation of the necropsy laboratory through management of logistics, consumables, equipment, maintenance of records, and samples. Through close collaboration with the Pathology & Diagnostics team, the position will facilitate the core activities of the diagnostic service: gross necropsy, histopathology, and biobanking. Responsible for establishing and maintaining effective relationships with clinical investigators, staff, and external researchers and facilitating the collection, analysis, storage, and shipment of samples for collaborative research projects.
Essential Functions:
Necropsy: 60%
Perform basic necropsy laboratory procedures as described in agreed necropsy and sampling protocols for dissection, specimen photography, specimen collection, data collection, necropsy report writing, and data entry.
Perform basic necropsy procedures (basic dissection, tissue collection/preservation, tissue trimming, sample collection, etc.) on marine mammals or sea turtles.
Ensures data entered into Center’s in-house electronic animal record system (Ruby), shipment of samples as dictated through shipping regulations, and record keeping is reflected timely and accurately. This includes archives, samples received and shipped (including histopathology samples), complete tracking documentation, and preparation of pathology materials and data for in-house biobank.
Pull samples and ship for external and/or internal testing as requested by pathologists for ancillary testing or for approved internal or external research projects, and complete entry of laboratory results into the patient record in Ruby.
Manage and maintain pathology digital photo archive, including taking necropsy and histopathology photos in accordance with protocols and after training.
Performs quality control on internal data entry for cases, samples, and various research projects for accuracy within Ruby.
Maintains necropsy facility, equipment, consumable supplies, PPE, signage, and hygiene following USDA good laboratory practice (GLP) standards.
Ensures proper adherence to biosafety procedures and protocols in accordance with OSHA and internal policies. May assist in evaluating and developing biosafety protocols.
Coordinates the disposal of carcasses, biohazard tissues, formalin, and formalin fixed tissues.
Ensures proper adherence to NOAA and other agencies permitting requirements for necropsy/pathology services at the Center.
Coordinate schedule of necropsy duty for pathologists, technical staff, and volunteers, as well as teaching hospital participants and teaching opportunities (e.g. wet labs).
Assists in coordinating review of necropsy protocols and sampling requirements on an annual basis or more frequently as required (e.g. Dependent on disease outbreaks or other unforeseen events).
Act as liaison with external partners for sea otter and sea turtle necropsies, sample collection, data collection, communication, and paperwork.
Perform field necropsy of large whales while acting as a liaison with partner agencies such as CAS, including processing samples and assembly of paperwork including necropsy reports.
Maintain equipment and sample archive for large whale necropsies.
Reviews and coordinates specimen requests and relationships for collaborative (internal and external) research projects that require pathology specimens or results, including making protocols for sample collection for the necropsy floor.
Histology: 15%
Perform basic histology laboratory procedures (trimming wet histopathology tissues).
Maintains the histopathology biobank (wet tissues, slides, paraffin blocks) similar to responsibilities described above for tissue archive, including shipping and receiving samples, sample preparation, data entry and quality control in Ruby.
Act as liaison on internal projects and cases regarding pathology/histology-based specimens and data, including specimen retrieval.
Act as liaison on external collaborative projects regarding pathology/histology-based specimens and data, including shipment and receiving samples.
Training & Educational Outreach: 10%
Trains and assists with training Teaching Hospital Program participants and pathology visitors in gross necropsy skills and anatomy.
Coordinate scheduling of and may teach wet labs and workshops for visiting participants.
Schedule and coordinate pathology visitors and Teaching Hospital Program participants.

Qualifications and Experience:
This position requires a combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in animal science, biology, anatomy, or related field; or a relevant qualification such as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Technician (LAT), or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification or veterinary technician training and curriculum in a certified program; and 4 years of experience in a laboratory or related animal science with at least 2 years necropsy experience preferred; and 2 years of supervisory experience.
Respirator Fit Test required which will be provided upon hire and ongoing as necessary.
Valid driver license with acceptable motor vehicle record to maintain standards of insurability.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
This position requires work in a necropsy and laboratory environment, which requires use of sharp objects, working around mechanical parts, working with or near known or unknown toxic or caustic chemicals and/or biological hazards, exposure to fumes and airborne particles, and working with strong odors associated with animals and carcasses.
This position requires work in an environment that involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials or chemicals and situations that require extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment and completion of training procedures.
This position operates in a professional office, laboratory, and hospital environment both indoors and outdoors with access to other parts of the facilities via outdoor pathways.
Working in outdoor weather conditions and elements may be required for field necropsies.
Routinely uses standard office equipment requiring repetitive motion.
Ability to work at a desk for extended periods of time using a computer.
Ability to participate in cetacean mortality investigations, requiring training and use of sharp instruments.

This position requires a combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in animal science, biology, anatomy, or related field; or a relevant qualification such as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Technician (LAT), or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification or veterinary technician training and curriculum in a certified program; and 4 years of experience in a laboratory or related animal science with at least 2 years necropsy experience preferred; and 2 years of supervisory experience.

The Pathology & Diagnostic Apprentice will observe, assist, and contribute to necropsy, histopathology, clinical laboratory techniques, biobanking, and research at a marine mammal rehabilitation hospital. The apprentice will work closely with the Pathology and Diagnostic team under the supervision of the Necropsy Manager to facilitate the core daily activities of the diagnostic service.
Team Overview:
The Pathology & Diagnostic team at The Marine Mammal Center performs necropsies and samples up to 500 cases a year on various pinniped species, large and small cetaceans, southern sea otters, and a few sea turtles.
Essential Functions
Necropsy: 60%
Assist in sampling during necropsy.
Enter specimens and data into the database.
Keep the necropsy lab clean and stocked.
Assist in maintenance of necropsy lab, equipment, and supplies.
Assist/perform necropsies on carcasses as needed or directed.
Assist/participate in large whale necropsy response.
Assist in fulfilling sample requests and collaborative research projects.
As needed or directed, assist, or perform the trimming of formalin fixed tissues for histology.
Research: 12.5%
Assist in sample collection and storage for research purposes.
Assist in data collection through use of clinical laboratory equipment (serum chemistry analyzer), urinalysis, histology trimming, etc.
Inputting data into database.
Data and statistical analysis.
Biobank: 12.5%
Archive specimens collected at necropsy and updating the database.
Participate in freezer inventory and updating the database.
Assist with archive of histology samples, including the formalin fixed tissues, glass slides and paraffin blocks.

Position Classification & Expected Hours of Work, and Travel: This is a full-time, non-exempt, temporary position.
Apprenticeship will last for one (1) full year.
Regular onsite work is required.
Work hours are generally Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, with some seasonal variability.
Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Specifically, weekend work due to cetacean response is to be expected.
Some travel within California is expected for this position.

Job Summary
The Pathology & Diagnostic Apprentice will observe, assist, and contribute to necropsy, histopathology, clinical laboratory techniques, biobanking, and research at a marine mammal rehabilitation hospital. The apprentice will work closely with the Pathology and Diagnostic team under the supervision of the Necropsy Manager to facilitate the core daily activities of the diagnostic service.
Team Overview:
The Pathology & Diagnostic team at The Marine Mammal Center performs necropsies and samples up to 500 cases a year on various pinniped species, large and small cetaceans, southern sea otters, and a few sea turtles.
Essential Functions
Necropsy: 60%
Assist in sampling during necropsy.
Enter specimens and data into the database.
Keep the necropsy lab clean and stocked.
Assist in maintenance of necropsy lab, equipment, and supplies.
Assist/perform necropsies on carcasses as needed or directed.
Assist/participate in large whale necropsy response.
Assist in fulfilling sample requests and collaborative research projects.
As needed or directed, assist, or perform the trimming of formalin fixed tissues for histology.
Research: 12.5%
Assist in sample collection and storage for research purposes.
Assist in data collection through use of clinical laboratory equipment (serum chemistry analyzer), urinalysis, histology trimming, etc.
Inputting data into database.
Data and statistical analysis.
Biobank: 12.5%
Archive specimens collected at necropsy and updating the database.
Participate in freezer inventory and updating the database.
Assist with archive of histology samples, including the formalin fixed tissues, glass slides and paraffin blocks.
Clinical Laboratory: 10%
Shadow clinical laboratory personnel.
Observe clinical laboratory techniques such as microbiology, hematology, parasitology, urinalysis, and cytology.
Administration & Other Duties as Assigned: 5%
Attend meeting with Necropsy Manager on Performance Evaluation and Planning.
Attend research meetings, and other appropriate meetings/seminars as assigned.
Perform special projects and research as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience
This position requires a combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in biology, marine science, or related field.
Preference for experience with research, specifically laboratory techniques that require pipetting and working with laboratory equipment. Research experience can be from undergraduate course work. Previous experience, exposure to necropsy, biosampling and/or data entry is a plus.
Valid driver license with acceptable motor vehicle record to maintain standards of insurability.
Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination or waiver (medical or religious)
Respirator Fit Test required which will be provided upon hire.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This position operates in a professional office, laboratory, and hospital environment both indoors and outdoors with access to other parts of the facilities via outdoor pathways.
Exposure to slippery surfaces and working in outdoor weather conditions and elements.
Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, scanners, and filing cabinets.
Ability to work at a desk for extended periods using a computer.
Ability to perform physical work requiring manual dexterity, agility, strength, and coordination including ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

DRD will identify and develop funding sources to support existing and planned program activities as well as facilitate the development, writing, and submission of grant proposals to federal, state, and private funding agencies. Job Summary:
The Cetacean Conservation Biology Senior Coordinator plays a key role in The Marine Mammal Center’s cetacean research and conservation program (Cetacean Conservation Biology (CCB)). The Senior Coordinator supports all aspects of the research program including the coordination of fieldwork and its participants, data management, and regular travel within our California range for field work. Support research documentation, data management, and data request from collaborators in coordination with the CCB PI, research team, and the Research Committee.
Coordinate field surveys, participants, and logistics of fieldwork in collaboration with the CCB PI and research team.
Prepare reports and summaries on data being collected and progress of assigned projects.
Safely operate the Center’s vessels and assist other staff in the general upkeep of vessels.
Provide equipment management oversight and general upkeep of research equipment in coordination with other staff.

Job Summary
The Associate Veterinarian supports the work of the Conservation Programs Department as a member of the organization’s veterinary team. The Associate Veterinarian provides clinical medical care and contributes to case management for patients at The Marine Mammal Center. Additionally, this position contributes to the training and mentorship of Teaching Hospital participants in the clinical veterinary and animal husbandry tracks.
Essential Functions
Clinical: 60%
Conduct patient physical examinations, health assessments, treatments, and sample collection for rehabilitation care and in support of ongoing research projects.
Develop, implement, and execute diagnostic and therapeutic plans for patients, including euthanasia when indicated.
Coordinate and communicate with other personnel to ensure continuity and high standard of care.
In conjunction with other veterinary and animal care staff, advise Response Department personnel and satellite facilities as needed regarding whether response/intervention is appropriate, and when so, guide appropriate response and initiation of care including husbandry and treatment.
Provide evening, on-call, in-person animal care in response to patient emergencies in Sausalito.
Provide evening, on-call, remote animal care through telephone and text communication with staff and volunteers at all California facilities: Sausalito Hospital, Monterey Bay Operations, and San Luis Obispo Operations.
Administrative: 15%
Maintain accurate and complete patient medical and husbandry records in a primarily electronic medical records database (“RUBY”), including specific reports required for protected species in accordance with federal and state regulations.
Record controlled drug use in compliance with DEA regulations.
Contribute to development and annual review of medical protocols including retrospective review of patient treatment outcomes.
Leadership & Education: 20%
Provide mentorship and instruction to participants in the Center’s Teaching Hospital program.

Participate in current and historical data entry into database to ensure proper information is collected and available for monthly National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS) reporting.
Maintain frozen tissue and fluid archives (biobank).

Physician-Scientist Recruitment Endo and Meta
The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism in the Department of Medicine at The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and UCSF Medical Center is seeking to recruit up to two outstanding Physician-Scientists at any faculty rank in the academic series most aligned with their qualifications and specific research interests. Successful candidates will be expected to develop and/or maintain a robust, independently funded laboratory or clinical research program in any area of endocrinology. We encourage applications from individuals conducting exciting research in areas ranging from the basic sciences to broadly defined areas of clinical research, including genetics, cohort-based studies, trials, bioinformatics, clinical informatics, and epidemiology. Successful faculty members will also participate in the clinical, educational, and service missions of the Division. Successful candidates should be able to demonstrate the establishment of an interesting research niche, coupled with a funding and publication track record commensurate with their academic career stage. A complementary clinical area of expertise would be beneficial as well.
