Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or equivalent and five years of field survey experience as a crew chief; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience.Applicants within six months of meeting the minimum education/experience requirement may be considered for trainee status. 

A Valid Florida Driver License is required and a Motor Vehicle Record that meets the requirements of Alachua County policy #6-7; Motor Vehicle Records will be reviewed prior to employment.   If, in the past 24-month period, the applicants Motor Vehicle Record has more than three (3) moving traffic infractions or three (3) or more at fault motor vehicle accidents (or combination of both and /or a conviction/pending charge for driving under the influence) or is in violation of any standard mandated by Federal or State Law or Regulation, the minimum qualifications are not met for the position. 
Successful completion of all applicable background checks pre-hire and ongoing are required.Position Summary

This is skilled technical surveying work involving the application of advanced level surveying skills and techniques, including the operation of all survey instruments necessary to perform assignments. The employee supervises the field activities of a survey crew. Work is performed in accordance with prescribed and established surveying procedures.
An employee assigned to this classification performs advanced level surveying tasks which require considerable skill and previous field experience to do an effective job.

Work is performed under the direction of a higher level supervisor in accordance with specific instructions and defined procedures and schedules. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports and observation of results obtained.Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

This is an emergency essential classification. Upon declaration of a disaster and/or emergency, all employees in this classification are required to work.
Exudes a positive customer service focus.

Acts as crew chief in supervising the work of field survey crew in determining the exact form, extent and position of points, elevations, lines, areas and contours of the earth's surface.
 Performs calculations involving angles, elevations and distances for roads, rights-of-way, boundaries, sidewalks, drainage ditches, retention basins, etc.

Operates instruments such as theodolite, total station, compass, electronic distance meter, pipe locator, level, GPS, data collector, etc.

Sets grades and performs layout for road construction and drainage projects.

Establishes and records geodetic control monumentation.

Determines position for, and placement of, targets for aerial photograph control.

Prepares and maintains daily field notes and sketches of work performed for use in developing architectural, engineering, surveying and property acquisition projects.

Maintains records of time worked and assignments of field personnel.

Clears line of sight using machete, chain saw and other tools to clear brush and trees.

Assists survey crew as needed.

Drives a County and/or personal vehicle to perform required duties. 

Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of standard terminology, techniques, and practices of land surveying and mapping.

Considerable knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry and its application to field surveying and mapping computations.

Considerable knowledge of minimum technical standards for surveying.

Knowledge and experience in the operation of GPS instruments and the method of calculation of positions based upon GPS observations.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to accurately read and record horizontal and vertical measurements.

Ability to perform job assignments under adverse physical conditions.

Ability to read and comprehend survey, engineering and architectural plans.

Ability to read, comprehend and sketch legal descriptions.

Ability to write in a clear penmanship.

Physical ability to walk long distances over rough terrain while carrying survey equipment.

Ability to understand and follow voice and hand commands.

Ability to download and upload projects from data collector.

Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and general public.

Ability to understand minimum technical standards for surveying.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and works in close proximity to heavy equipment and high-speed traffic. The employee may be required to walk through wet and rough terrain.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, with exposure to loud noise while the chain saw is in operation.

Sick leave is earned at a rate of 4 hours per pay period by all permanent, full-time employees*. At the end of each fiscal year, eligible employees can convert up to 10 days of accrued sick leave to vacation leave on a 2:1 basis.
