Assistant Vice President, Media Relations and News
Johns Hopkins University was founded in 1876 and is one of the world's premier teaching and research institutions with nearly 22,000 students across nine academic divisions. The Assistant Vice President, Media Relations and News must be a visionary leader who will play a critically important role in communicating the Johns Hopkins University's mission of teaching, discovery and patient care. Reporting to the Vice President for Communications, who reports directly to the President, the role is an essential component of an effort to build on the strong reputation of one of the world's truly elite universities and an anchor of the Baltimore community.
In this role, the AVP will have direct responsibility for the development and execution of a proactive communications plan that drives international, national and local media relations, and for the strategic use of owned media assets to amplify the reach of the University's messaging.
The AVP will work closely with the Vice President and the AVPs for Strategic Communications and Marketing and Integrated Brand Management to develop and carry out communications plans for executive‐level initiatives that support the priorities and strategic vision of the President, as well as those related to complex issues and crisis management.
Operating in a highly decentralized environment, this individual will work collegially and effectively across the various divisions, while strengthening centralized capabilities to create a unified, results‐oriented communications organization dedicated to serving the University's interests and those of its students, faculty and staff.
- Develop a proactive media relations strategy to capitalize on Johns Hopkins University's strong reputation and multiple areas of expertise.
- Manage a dynamic media relations team to increase the University's share of voice and coverage in top‐tier media outlets.
- Deepen the University's relationships in international, national and local media.
- Leverage media relations capabilities in the University's divisions in service of a unified media relations and news strategy.
- Manage digital and print owned media assets and a skilled content creation team to support the University's strategic messaging goals and to further its earned media strategies.
- Expand the use of digital analytics to evaluate and refine the office's content creation strategies and practices.
- Manage media relations and the use of owned media around executive‐level or institution‐wide priorities, working closely with the staff of the Office of the President.
- Collaborate cross‐functionally to develop strategic communications efforts through earned and owned media that showcase Johns Hopkins' role in the community as an anchor institution, including close working relationships with the Office of Government Affairs, Economic Development, and Johns Hopkins Medicine Marketing and Communications.
- Work with the other AVPs on the University Communications team, to assist the Vice President with developing the annual budget for the division.
- Serve as a key member of the Office of Communications Division's leadership team and assist the Vice President in the refinement and execution of the strategic plan for the organization.
- Represent the office and the Vice President as necessary on University initiatives and at events.
- Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing or related field.
- At least 12 years of communications, public relations or media relations experience, preferably managing a diverse team of professionals in a large, complex and decentralized environment. Experience in higher education is a plus.
- Demonstrated success in media relations on both strategic and tactical levels.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Mastery of the analytical tools used to determine the effectiveness of issues and reputation management programs - and an ability to communicate the ROI of such work to leadership - is essential.
- Understanding of the issues facing higher education today and a passion for the mission of a world‐class research institution.
- Experience as a spokesperson, including live‐ and on‐camera situations.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate controversial or complicated concepts clearly and concisely and the ability to make public presentations before a wide variety of audiences.
- Confident leadership style, with an emphasis on staff development.
- Ability to thrive in a large, decentralized, and fast‐paced organization, and to manage multiple complex projects and initiatives simultaneously. Close collaboration within the communications team and with divisional communications professionals is essential.
- Appreciation of the unique responsibilities and challenges of working at an elite university.
- A level of experience and confidence to build credibility and collaborate with the most senior University leadership.
- Excellent project management skills.
- Firm grasp of budgeting and financial modeling for the communications function.
- Ability and willingness to keep abreast of the latest developments in communications technology and to integrate them into the unit's work.
- Demonstrated success as a manager and leader.
