Job Description

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our staff of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and internationally from our offices in New York; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Santa Monica; San Francisco; Bozeman, Montana; and Beijing.

Position Summary:

NRDC is seeking a Junior Accountant to work with the Accounting and Finance team in our New York office. The Junior Accountant assists the Accounting Manager with the following key responsibilities.


  • Prepares standard and regular entries as assigned. Performs data entry of journal entries into general ledger system for investment and Fixed Assets.
  • Assists in preparing and uploading journal entries for month-end close.
  • Reconciles various investment and Fixed Asset accounts (daily, weekly, & monthly) by gathering statements and balancing information.
  • Prepares daily cash reports.
  • Maintains spreadsheets and prepares activity logs as needed for the department.
  • Compiles data for internal monthly analysis reports and maintains year-to-date reports of same as assigned.
  • Performs monthly investment account reconciliations as assigned and maintains records of the same on a year-to-date basis.
  • Investigates and traces discrepancies and records adjustments into the general ledger.
  • Assists with processing of cash transfers, investment subscriptions, redemptions, and distributions.
  • Collaborates with team members to produce backup materials and schedules for annual audits.
  • Support Fixed Asset ledger, depreciation, and reconciliation.


  • 1 year of Accountant experience.
  • Bachelors in Accounting required
  • Good written and oral communication skills; ability to organize a number of tasks, set priorities, and pay meticulous attention to detail.
  • Good excel and computer skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, technical and analytical skills.

Job grade for this role Solves 1 with a salary ranging from $60,000 to $65,000.  Internal equity considerations and the average salary of the peer range will be reviewed before making a final offer.
