The Position

The City of Portland is seeking a Construction Equipment Operator in the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT). Construction Equipment Operator's operate heavy duty motorized construction equipment such as backhoes, dozers, front-end loaders, road graders, cold milling machines, paving equipment such as asphalt rollers, paving machines, and recycling equipment such as rock crushers and screen plants, and perform work for the Parks, Water or Maintenance Bureaus.  This highly skilled work requires safe, skillful, and efficient use of the machines to build or repair streets, sidewalks, water lines, and sewers, or in assisting on other City construction projects, and requires operators to service and make minor repairs on their machines as needed.   Assignments involve responsibility for the safe operation of others working in conjunction with the equipment and occasionally directing the work of unskilled or semi-skilled helpers.  The current vacancy is within the Portland Bureau of Transportation.  Other bureaus may use the eligible list developed from this recruitment to fill future vacancies.

To Qualify

Your answers to the supplemental questions and the information provided on your work history will be used to determine if the minimum qualifications are met.

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position.:
  1. Experience in the operation of excavation equipment
  2. Experience driving a large truck with trailer to transport construction equipment
  3. Knowledge of the OUNC (Oregon Utility Notification Center) AKA Oregon Dig Law and safe work practices applying construction and construction equipment
  4. Proven ability to understand oral and written instructions such as construction plans and/or maintenance and service requests.
  5. Proven ability to effectively work in a team environment
  6. Skill in safely and efficiently operating equipment assigned

An evaluation of each applicant's training and experience, as demonstrated in their work history as well as answers to the supplemental questions will determine minimum qualifications. Candidates passing the minimum qualifications will be invited to the Work Skills Demonstration Test (Tentatively scheduled for mid-late september) weighted at 100%

Only the most qualified applicants passing the Work Skills Demonstration Test will be placed on a ranked eligible list.  You have 14 days from the notice of the examination results to let us know if you disagree with your results. Paid Leave
  • 80 hours of vacation each year initially. This accrual will increase over time. 
  • Sick leave typically accrues at the rate of 104 hours each year
