SALARY: $48,401.60 Annually

Graduation from high school or equivalent and four years progressively responsible experience in the construction and maintenance of County highways and streets, including two years of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. Applicants within six months of meeting the minimum education/experience requirement may be considered for trainee status.

 Position Summary: This is responsible administrative and supervisory work assisting with directing road construction and maintenance for the Department of Public Works.

This is an emergency essential classification. Upon declaration of a disaster and/or emergency, all employees in this classification are required to work.

An employee assigned to this classification is responsible for assisting the Road Superintendent in the coordination and supervision of labor, maintenance crews and equipment while reconstruction, resurfacing and general highway maintenance work are performed.
Work is performed under the direction of a higher level supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, reports and observations of results obtained.

 Examples of Duties: ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Exudes a positive customer service focus.
 Advocates building organizational culture through aligning decisions with core values including: integrity, honesty, respect, diversity, innovation, accountability and communication.

Supervises and coordinates the activities of subordinate supervisors and employees including determining work procedures and schedules; issuing instructions and assigning duties; reviewing work; recommending personnel actions; conducting performance reviews; and conducting departmental training and orientation.
Assists with the supervision of all County road and highway operations; and the building and reconstruction of streets and roads.
 Utilizes preventative maintenance programs for roads; makes frequent inspections of all highways to determine maintenance needs of surfaces, shoulders, structures, and drainage facilities; assigns employees to make such repairs.

Checks daily with various crews building, rebuilding and maintaining roads to ensure that work is proceeding according to plan; resolves any problems that arise.
Requisitions gravel, sand and other materials used; requisitions equipment, keeps simple inventories of materials on hand; records location and purpose of materials used.

Directs subordinate supervisors in the maintenance of all County roads, streets, retention basins, drainage structures, and rights-of-way.
 Acts as field superintendent; plans, lays out and supervises all work including building and rebuilding bridges; installing culverts, laying and repairing pipe; dynamite blasting and deepening, cleaning and widening of canals and ditches; and spraying herbicide.

Meets with the public and answers any questions, requests and complaints regarding public works activities in the area.

Responds to requests for information and complaints from the general public.

Contacts local officials about maintenance and construction activities in their areas.

Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.
