Associate Director

ALLERTON PARK AND RETREAT CENTER

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN

 

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has an opening for an Associate Director of Allerton Park and Retreat Center near Monticello, Illinois. The Associate Director will manage overall park operations, manage a team of 7-8 employees and oversee day-to-day operational planning. Start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits eligible Academic Professional appointment.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Daily management of Allerton Park and Retreat Center grounds and buildings
  • Active oversight of park operations to ensure that the park supports the mission of the University of Illinois and is safe and accessible to all staff, students, and visitors
  • Active participation in and oversight of construction and capital improvement projects
  • Active oversight of public programs offered in the park to ensure that programs further the Allerton mission and support the Park
  • Work closely with development staff to obtain funding to improve park infrastructure and maintenance of formal gardens and grounds.
  • Strong background in grounds and garden design, management, and culture.
  • Work closely with the Director of Allerton Park and Retreat Center to set fiscal policies, development priorities, and revenue targets
  • Oversee building maintenance, grounds maintenance, and natural areas management divisions.
  • Work closely with campus personnel to ensure that all facilities improvements meet applicable life-safety and ADA guidelines and university requirements
  • Work closely with campus personnel to ensure that capital improvements to Allerton facilities and gardens-are consistent with University historic preservation goals
  • Work with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and other agencies to manage and restore Allerton natural areas

 

Qualifications: The successful candidate should possess a BS degree in horticulture, construction management, wildlife management or related field with a minimum of five years progressive experience in construction and building management, project management, natural areas management, or related field. The candidate should possess outstanding management & communication skills, including the ability to mobilize and motivate staff on a daily basis; Extensive experience in budget management, with special emphasis on managing construction and project budgets; Clear understanding of historic preservation issues as related to capital improvement and maintenance of historic buildings; Broad understanding of sustainable building technologies and practices as well as understanding and experience with natural areas restoration, invasive species management, and wildlife management; Broad understanding of the various facets of running a large state park as well as experience with large research universities, faculty and students; Demonstrated mastery of computer programs including Word, Excel, AutoCAD, ARCGis and FileMaker.
