Utah State University (USU) invites nominations and applications for a significant academic leadership position as founding director of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Education and Mathematics (STE2M) Center. Utah State University is a Carnegie Research University - High Research Activity, and Utah's land-grant and space-grant institution. Founded in 1888 as the Agriculture College of Utah, USU is the oldest and largest public residential campus in Utah. The university is experiencing a record enrollment of 29,000 students this year with approximately 12,500 of those at USU’s five regional campuses and in distance programs. In addition, more than 5,000 high school students are enrolled in USU courses as part of a statewide concurrent enrollment program.
Utah State University graduates students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines from four academic colleges: Agriculture, Engineering, Natural Resources, and Science. In addition, the USU Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services is ranked in the top 2% of graduate schools of education (currently 29th in a field of 1200; U.S. News and World Report) and is home to a strong, research-active group of STEM-educators. With these intellectual assets as a foundation, USU is well positioned to develop a university-wide initiative intended to achieve three objectives: (1) increase the number of quality STEM professionals; (2) increase the number of quality STEM educators; and (3) conduct innovative research on best practices in STEM education. The Utah State University Foundation Board has named the STE2M Center their number one philanthropic priority, and within only a few months has raised nearly $500,000 in start-up funds. In addition, Utah State University is making a substantial commitment of ongoing salary and operating funds, space, facilities, and staff to support the long term success of the STE2M Center.
The full-time position of founding Director of the USU STE2M Center is an extraordinary opportunity for academic leadership with broad impact on the academic units on the multi-campus USU system. The director will report directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost, and will provide administrative and intellectual leadership to capitalize on USU’s strengths in both STEM and Education disciplines. The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader with experience working with colleagues in both STEM and STEM education and a record that demonstrates a collaborative leadership style. In addition, the successful candidate will value the diversity of STEM disciplines across the university; effectively promote innovative growth in STEM research and teaching, including regional campuses and distance education programs; enhance the infrastructure to support and expand STEM efforts campus-wide; and, foster partnerships both within and outside of the university community to better prepare STEM and STEM education students for successful careers. If qualified, the selected director of the STE2M Center will be eligible for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in an appropriate academic unit.
The position is available July 1, 2012 or at a time convenient to the selected individual. Application review will begin February 1, 2012 and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should submit a letter describing their qualifications for the position and a statement regarding their vision of the role and responsibilities for a STE2M Center Director in a modern, research-intensive university that values both undergraduate and graduate education.
